Kaffara is the expiation prescribed in Islam for intentionally breaking a fast or an oath. For a deliberately broken fast, it is fulfilled by feeding 60 people in need (or fasting 60 consecutive days if you are able). For a broken oath, it is feeding 10 people in need. Afghanistan remains one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. An estimated 21.9 million people, nearly half the population, need assistance in 2026, including more than 10.7 million women and girls. More than 17 million faced acute food insecurity through March 2026, and millions live in areas prone to drought and acute watery diarrhoea. About 6 million Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan since 2023, over half of them children, most arriving with no savings, assets or housing. Earthquakes in 2025 left thousands displaced, and 2026 floods and climate shocks affected 31 of 34 provinces, while needs continue to outpace funding.
In Gaza, 72,599 Palestinians were killed and 172,411 injured between 7 October 2023 and 29 April 2026, and more than 10,000 are missing. More than 90% of the population has been displaced, many of them multiple times, which is about 1.9 million people. Between mid-April and 30 June 2026, over 1.2 million people (59% of the population) faced Crisis or worse food insecurity, including 212,000 in Emergency. That is projected to reach 1.4 million (67%) through December. 74,200 children under five will need treatment for acute malnutrition by April 2027, 11,432 of them severe cases. Nearly half of households receive less than 15 litres of water per person per day, and 90% of health facilities are damaged or destroyed.
Africa’s largest crises are driven by conflict, displacement, hunger and disease outbreaks, and funding is falling short everywhere. In Sudan, 33.7 million people need help and nearly 14 million are displaced, inside the country and abroad, with famine risk in Darfur and Kordofan.
